Dutch-born Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) painted this self-portrait in Paris in late 1887. His Paris self-portraits serve as a record of his painterly experiments and this example utilises particularly bold colours. It seems clear from this work that he had studied the technique of the Pointillists and applied it in his own original way. He placed the short stripes of paint in different directions. Where they follow the outline of his head, they form a kind of halo.
In addition this portrait informs us about Van Gogh in Paris. The image he presents by portraying himself in a smart suit and hat is of Van Gogh as a man of the city.
